Broadband Forum celebrates 20 years of TR-069 standard's impact

Fri, 24th May 2024

The Broadband Forum is commemorating the 20th anniversary of its pioneering TR-069 standard, a significant milestone that has laid the groundwork for the organisation’s flagship User Services Platform (USP).

TR-069, since its inception in 2004, has been instrumental in enabling ubiquitous global internet access, empowering Internet Service Providers (ISPs) worldwide to manage billions of devices effectively. The Forum has now announced that there will be no further updates to the TR-069 standard, as its successor, TR-369/USP, is poised to lead future developments in device management.

Reflecting on the impact of TR-069, Jason Walls, Broadband Forum Connected Home Chair, expressed his gratitude to the community of developers, engineers, and contributors who have propelled the TR-069 standard over the past two decades. “As we reflect on the extraordinary growth and success of TR-069 since its inception in 2004, we must continue to build on its solid foundation as we look to the future and the baton passes to USP,” he stated.

TR-069 has facilitated ISPs in remotely managing Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) such as modems and routers, enabling communication between CPE and Auto Configuration Servers (ACS). The User Services Platform (USP) expands on this by introducing improvements that cater to Internet of Things (IoT) devices and provide greater scalability in device management. USP ensures rapid response times for network issues, automates tasks to curtail operational costs, and enhances customer satisfaction.

The Broadband Forum has assured ISPs of a smooth transition from TR-069 to USP, providing the necessary tools and resources to integrate USP without disrupting existing services. Gavin Young, Vodafone and former Broadband Forum Technical Chair when TR-069 was first published, highlighted the Forum's commitment to innovation. “The Broadband Forum remains committed to delivering innovation and USP is testament to that, playing a crucial role in addressing the demands of modern network environments and IoT proliferation,” he said.

TR-369/USP, which is gaining widespread adoption, has been designed to address the limitations of TR-069 and support more advanced and scalable network management capabilities. Enhanced features of USP include support for multiple controllers, real-time data notifications, and improved efficiency in managing connected devices.

Elizabeth Parks, President and CMO of Parks Associates, noted the growing demand for advanced devices like doorbells, door locks, and networked cameras, which is complicating consumer home networks. “Half of the US households with internet experience issues with their network relating to quality of experience,” she stated. Consumers are showing increased interest in network add-on services that enable network optimisation and device control, and the transition to USP is seen as a pivotal development for the industry.

The 2024 USP Summit, held in March, brought together industry leaders and experts to discuss advancements and future directions in device management. Key discussions emphasised the importance of standardised solutions, enhanced customer support, and security for ISPs, as well as the seamless transition from TR-069 to USP.

The Broadband Forum encourages all stakeholders in the telecommunications industry to engage and leverage collective expertise to stay at the forefront of the evolving landscape of device management.
