Airtel, Google Cloud stream IPL 2026 with low latency

Airtel used Google Cloud to deliver its Indian Premier League 2026 live streams across 74 matches. The setup handled several hundred petabytes of egress data during the season.

The final alone processed tens of billions of requests and reached peak egress of several terabits per second. The service was designed to manage sharp spikes in concurrent viewing during key moments of play.

A central part of the delivery model was Google Cloud's Media CDN, which Airtel used to serve traffic from edge locations close to viewers in India. According to the companies, 99.9% of tournament traffic was served locally within India, which they presented as a key factor in maintaining the stream during periods of intense demand.

That localised approach also reduced the amount of traffic reaching origin servers. Airtel recorded an overall cache hit ratio of more than 98%, meaning most viewer requests were served from the edge rather than passed back to the underlying video platform.

The companies also disclosed latency figures for the tournament. Airtel maintained p99 latency below 300 milliseconds throughout the competition, a level it linked to faster stream starts and a lower risk of buffering during matches.

Operational model

The broadcast arrangement combined network architecture with a support structure designed for live events that run across evenings and weekends. Engineering teams from both sides carried out readiness reviews before the tournament, including checks on projected traffic, manifest configurations, and failover arrangements.

The companies also relied on continuous telemetry monitoring through a monitoring-as-a-service model for Media CDN. This gave teams real-time visibility into network behaviour during matches and was intended to help identify problems before viewers were affected.

Support increased further during weekend fixtures and the playoff stage. Google Cloud's Technical Account Management team and monitoring teams worked with Airtel engineers during live events, providing direct operational support when audiences were expected to be at their highest.

Live sports streaming has become a critical test case for cloud and network providers because major tournaments generate short bursts of traffic at a scale that can overwhelm conventional delivery systems. Cricket, particularly the Indian Premier League, is one of the clearest examples, as audience demand can surge sharply in the final overs of a closely contested match.

For telecom and media groups, the commercial risk of any outage or visible drop in quality is significant. A dropped stream during a major sporting fixture can trigger customer complaints, reputational damage, and pressure on subscriber retention, especially in a market where viewers increasingly expect television and digital feeds to perform to the same standard.

Airtel framed the IPL project as a test of both infrastructure design and event-day discipline. It said the combination of edge delivery, high cache efficiency, and close monitoring helped keep operational friction low throughout the tournament.

"Our goal for IPL 2026 was to deliver an uninterrupted, stadium-grade viewing experience to cricket fans across India, regardless of concurrency surges or network conditions. Partnering with Google Cloud and using Media CDN gave us deep local edge proximity and excellent cache efficiency. Combined with proactive match-day real-time monitoring, we delivered a reliable broadcast experience from start to finish," said Airtel.

Google Cloud cast the deployment as an example of how large-scale live media distribution is shifting towards a mix of local edge presence and constant observability, rather than relying solely on raw centralised capacity. In this case, the model enabled Airtel to sustain high demand throughout the tournament while keeping most traffic within India.

The figures disclosed by the companies point to the scale of the workload involved in national live sports streaming. Across the 74 matches, several hundred petabytes of egress data were delivered, while the final alone drew request volumes in the tens of billions and network throughput in the multi-terabit-per-second range.

Those metrics underline how far streaming infrastructure has shifted from a back-end technical issue to a front-line commercial function for broadcasters, telecom operators, and cloud suppliers. In Airtel's case, the tournament produced a cache hit ratio above 98%, 99.9% local delivery within India, and p99 latency below 300 milliseconds.
