Proximus Global launches Konera to simplify network APIs in India
Proximus Global has introduced Konera, a global network API aggregation platform designed to simplify connectivity for enterprises, fintechs, and developers.
The platform brings together APIs from multiple mobile network operators (MNOs), aiming to deliver straightforward access to communications and identity services within a unified solution. Konera's inception aligns with the GSMA CAMARA open API framework, a move that prioritises global standardisation and closer integration across telecommunications networks and applications.
API aggregation
Konera is among Proximus Global's first major platforms to integrate combined capabilities from its subsidiaries. The offering leverages over 300 established MNO relationships through BICS and incorporates identity verification and fraud prevention from Telesign. This combined approach is aimed at supporting enterprises in rapidly deploying network-powered capabilities without navigating integrations with individual MNOs and managing various API connections.
With this new platform, developers and enterprises are expected to see improved efficiency in accessing identity verification and security solutions, which are increasingly critical in the fintech sector. The approach also helps operators deliver new services and monetise API offerings at global scale, according to company representatives.
Industry context
The move follows ongoing industry efforts to commercialise network APIs and open up new growth avenues across telecommunications and digital services. Aligning with the GSMA's CAMARA standardisation, Konera seeks to address the complexity that enterprises face in integrating with hundreds of network operators across multiple regions.
Proximus Global's Chief Product Officer, Jorn Vercamert, commented on the industry context and the company's strategic aims. He stated:
"Network APIs have long been seen as the telecoms industry's next big opportunity, turning network assets into programmable components that developers can easily use for identity verification, fraud prevention, and improving user experience. But for APIs to succeed on a global scale, they must be standardized and easy to access."
"The GSMA's CAMARA initiative addresses standardization, but operators still need support to make their networks API-ready, while enterprises need a single platform rather than dealing with hundreds of providers for coverage and features. Proximus Global's Konera, delivers on both fronts, making it easy for operators, enterprises and developers to deliver, monetize and consume new services."
The Konera platform capitalises on Telesign's established MNO Phone ID and intelligence API services, and combines them with BICS' network relationships. Proximus Global expects this to extend its reach, particularly in markets such as India, and position the company to grow its enterprise network API services across multiple regions.
India market focus
Proximus Global is placing significant emphasis on the Indian market with Konera, backed by partnerships with several of the country's primary telecoms networks and MNOs. The company estimates the platform will provide network API availability to 92% of India by the end of the year. This represents a step forward for both local enterprises and international businesses operating in the region.
Rajdip Gupta, Managing Director & CEO of Route Mobile, A Proximus Global Company, addressed the significance of this expansion for India's digital economy, saying:
"India's digital economy is thriving and primed for growth, with a vibrant developer ecosystem and a strong appetite for scalable, secure, and interoperable solutions. Through Konera we're building on Proximus Global's established foundation to unlock new monetization opportunities for operators and seamless integration for enterprises."
"This is just the beginning: as a global tech innovation hub, India is setting the pace for network API adoption, and Proximus Global is ready to help enterprises worldwide realize the full potential of programmable communications. According to Analysys Mason, global spending on CAMARA-based network APIs is expected to grow a staggering 1,282%, from USD $550 million in 2024 to USD $7.6 billion by 2030, underscoring the immense opportunity ahead."
The company currently serves over 100 global enterprises with expertise in identity and verification via 70 operators across 20 countries. These activities, now housed under the Konera platform, are expected to contribute to both regional and global network API readiness and adoption.
As global digital services continue to evolve, the demand for standardised, scalable, and easy-to-access network APIs is also anticipated to rise, particularly with increased requirements for security and user verification in sectors like fintech.
