Colt completes SAP cloud ERP migration across 40 countries

Thu, 16th Apr 2026

Colt Technology Services has completed a cloud ERP migration with SAP, covering the telecoms provider's operations in more than 40 countries.

The migration moved Colt to a system built around SAP S/4HANA, alongside SAP Ariba, SuccessFactors, Fieldglass, OpenText and BTP. The companies said the project unified Colt's ERP environment and brought together data previously spread across separate systems.

For Colt, the project addressed longstanding operational complexity tied to legacy hardware and recent acquisitions. The new setup now supports 80% of the business through fewer platforms, reducing the number of systems in use and simplifying its wider technology estate.

The overhaul was carried out with SAP's Enterprise Cloud Services team. It also included cleaning core data and moving customer data into the cloud, with the aim of creating a single platform for business information and decision-making.

Downtime cut

One measure of the project's execution was the level of disruption during the switchover. Colt had expected the migration to require 14 hours of business downtime, but mock rehearsals and preparation reduced that to 6.5 hours.

The shorter interruption limited operational disruption, reduced the need for manual workarounds and helped customer response times. For a telecoms operator managing services across multiple markets, those gains matter because operational continuity is closely tied to customer service and internal efficiency.

The move also reflects a broader pattern in telecoms, where operators are replacing older in-house systems with cloud-based business platforms to simplify operations after years of expansion, acquisitions and overlapping software estates. ERP modernisation has become a common way to standardise finance, procurement, HR and related functions across international businesses.

Colt employs about 6,000 people across Europe, Asia and North America. Its network footprint spans more than 40 countries, adding to the complexity of managing processes and data across departments and geographies.

In practical terms, consolidating ERP systems can affect procurement, workforce management, financial reporting and internal analytics. SAP said the Colt project has improved business analytics and decision-making while also delivering departmental cost savings.

Strategic shift

The migration is part of a wider digital transformation effort at Colt. The company linked the new platform to plans to modernise its core systems, support service development and strengthen its position in international telecoms markets.

Colt also said the completed work supports environmental goals by reducing reliance on older hardware and lowering the energy used to maintain it. As businesses move applications and data from on-premises infrastructure to cloud environments, they often cite lower hardware refresh cycles and reduced physical infrastructure needs as factors in cutting operational footprint.

"By modernising our core systems, we are better equipped to deliver for customers, bring new telco services to market and compete on an international stage," said Ashish Surti, Chief Digital & Information Officer, Colt Technology Services. "Our trusted partnership with SAP, particularly the support from the SAP ECS team in rehearsing and trialling our new environment, has given us confidence in the strength of our new cloud platform. With this digital foundation in place, we are ready to scale and explore new opportunities in AI and automation that will shape the next generation of telecommunications."

SAP positioned the project as an example of how telecoms groups are using cloud-based ERP systems to support international operations and improve access to data across business functions.

"Colt's successful cloud migration strengthens its ability to compete on the global telecom stage where reliable, smart connectivity is essential," said Leila Romane, Managing Director, SAP UKI. "By unifying its ERP and unlocking clear, strategic data insights across its critical business functions, Colt has the digital foundations to drive future growth, innovate with AI and advance its sustainability ambitions while confidently meeting rising customer expectations."
